Fiber Optic Networks and Pipeline Control

Pipelines are complex mechanical networks conveying liquid and gas products from point of origin to points of distribution. Pipelines are complicated to operate and maintain. Monitoring the status of the components that make a pipeline function and controlling those components has evolved dramatically over the last six decades.

These complex systems used to be manned heavily. Every pump or compressor station, valve settings and meter and regulation sites were manned and operated by physically opening and closing valves and adjusting pressures. The telephone was the main communication channel.

Today everything is automated. Sensors convey information about operating parameters. Valves can be operated by clicking on a computer screen. The challenge now is to maximize reliability and redundancy of the networks carrying this data.

Electric Conduit Construction (ECC) provides fiber optic installation services to all types of utility infrastructure, including, solar generating sites, electrical sub-stations, EV charging systems, telecommunications data centers, and pipelines.  Electric Conduit Construction plays a key role in adding resiliency to the control systems by installing, testing, and terminating fiber optic cable for devices and communications.

Fiber optic control offers operators real time connections to equipment in a plant or outside. The wide bandwidth of fiber optic cables can accommodate the data from, as an example, all the equipment inside a pump or compressor station along a pipeline. This data and the ability to control the equipment makes a difference when managing the flow of products or volume of gas being transported.

Fiber optic cable has a wider bandwidth, greater speed and is more dependable than telephone lines, cellular systems, or wire networks. The bandwidth allows for connections between an almost unlimited array of sensors, and actuators. Operators can now benefit from a complete picture of the status of the pipeline system and the movement of products through it.

ECC is contributing to this automation process by providing skilled and knowledgeable fiber optic technicians that can execute any scope of work involving fiber optic cable installation, termination, and testing.

ISP/OSP fiber services include:

  • Fiber installation aerial or underground
  • Installation by HDD or opencut
  • Any type of fiber 12ct-1,728ct. Singlemode and Multimode
  • Hand holes and manholes
  • Overhead spice cases
  • Outside plant (OSP) or inside plant (ISP) including Data Centers
  • Interior or exterior splice cabinets and splice enclosures
  • Can provide Power Meter, OTDR, iOLM, PMD, and CMD Testing
  • Each cable run tested Pre and Post installation.

ECC performs this type of work for major utilities, oil and gas pipeline companies, municipalities, and telecommunications companies.
